mary-maryOne of the most successful contemporary musical duos in gospel music is Mary Mary. They are sisters Erica and Tina Atkins, who grew up in Inglewood, CA. This sisterly duo came from a musically-inclined family. Their parents were gospel singers. They have five other sisters and a brother who were also singing in the church choir and then appeared on the Bobby Jones Gospel Show on BET. Eventually, Erica and Tina joined the Michael Matthews 1995 traveling gospel show, Mama I’m Sorry, followed by Sneaky, also a Matthews’ production. The sisters also toured as backup singers for various R&B singers such as Eric Benet, Brandy, Brian McKnight, and Kenny Lattimore.

After singing as backup for numerous R&B acts, Erica and Tina decided to try the music scene on their own. In 1998, they appeared on the Dr. Doolittle soundtrack through “Dance”, a song they wrote and performed with Robin S. “Let Go, Let God”, one of their inspirational songs was also used on The Price of Egypt Soundtrack.

They signed to Columbia/C2 Records and released their debut single, “Shackles (Praise You)”, a top-ten hit in US charts. In May 2000, they released their first album, Thankful. The album was very successful with the Christian audiences. A hipper version of their music which was a fusion of gospel and R&B appealed to the young crowd as well. Not only did their first album turned out to be commercially successful, it also won numerous awards, including a Grammy.

After two years, they released Incredible. Most of the material included in this album was written by the sisters themselves.

Before the release of their self-titled album in 2005, both Erica and Tina became mothers.

In 2008, The Sound was released, which marked a new phase in the sisters’ career.
